When a disaster strikes, a full-time caregiver becomes a “first responder” overnight. Whether you are navigating property damage or economic disruption, Alabama Lifespan Respite is here to provide emergency support, prevent burnout, and ensure the safety of your loved ones.

Do You Qualify?

Assistance is available to Alabama caregivers and care recipients impacted by:

  • Natural Disasters: Tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, and wildfires.

  • Home Emergencies: Displacement due to house fires or significant water damage (e.g., burst pipes).

What We Cover

Eligible expenses are designed to meet immediate, critical needs:

  • Emergency Respite Care: Temporary care so you can focus on recovery (FEMA forms, debris cleanup, or meeting adjusters).

  • Power for Life-Sustaining Devices: Portable generators for ventilators, oxygen concentrators, or electric wheelchairs.

  • Medical Replacements: Emergency prescription refills or durable medical equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, ramps).

  • Specialized Supplies: Hard-to-find items like feeding tube supplies or catheters that shelters may not stock.

  • Accessible Transportation: Help with mobility-impaired transport for care recipients.


Important Application Details

  • Response Time: Applications are reviewed during regular business hours, M-F, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (excludes holidays)

  • Payment: Funding varies and is sent via Direct Deposit or PayPal.

  • Limit: One application per household.

  • Documentation: Please have relevant disaster documentation ready, as it may be required to process your claim.
